THRESHOLD 3 PHOTOGRAPHY

Just before scurrying off for a bit of Thanksgiving downtime, we took a day with photographer Joel Barhamand to photograph the Threshold 3 Renovation in the East Village. Many details that had become dear to our hearts were photographed including huge sliding doors made from salvaged lathe slats, Panelite windows, and furniture done in collaboration with Tristan Warner. Owner Krista Knight has the greatest props including gold reindeer, robotic grasshoppers, relics from travels in South America and a set of beautiful antique journals, which we did our best to incorporate into the shots. Images should be posted soon on the MAKE Design website.

SPECULATIONS: Drawing out Possibilities in Architecture

Inaugural exhibition at the Marywood University School of Architecture Gallery

Center for Architectural Studies 2300 Adams Avenue Scranton, PA 18509-1598

October 23- November 23, 2009

Lecture by Alessandro Ayuso: Wednesday, November 11, 2009. 7 PM, Reception 8-9PM

The exhibit focuses on process in architecture. It was conceived not only as a didactic tool for the inaugural class of Marywood’s School of Architecture, but also as a way to address larger questions and possibilities of the spatial representation of built environments, digital and analog media, and urban design and planning. The pieces come from work on five unbuilt projects and includes sketches, architectural drawings, collages, models, presentation boards, and projections.

Exhibiting Designers: Alessandro Ayuso, the G_S_Squad (Alessandro Ayuso, Travis Hanks, William Haskas, Gigio Longo), and MAKE Design (Alessandro Ayuso, Charles Collins, Ian J. Colburn, John Graham, Travis Hanks, Michael Rodriguez)

OUR FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHERS

Recently we shot photos of the recently completed Horatio Apartment. A blast was had by all involved, and some excellent images were produced along the way; stay tuned to www.makenyc.com to see them. The point of this post is really to give a hearty shout out to Joel Barhamand and Ashley Macknica, our favorite dynamic photography duo, seen in action below:

Natural Patina of Natural Materials

Using texture with the Logo makes a world of difference to the feel and essence of the over all image. Some of my favorite textures in the world are of natural materials that have spent much of their lives under the elements. Old barn wood pelted by rain and snow. Rusted steel etched by the elements. Naturally eroding stone, and good ol' fashion dirt. They all have a raw, timeless, unquestioned quality. There is a history in the patina of such materials. There is a vibrancy in their present state. There is an energy in their future potential. Material choice and how those materials are used provide the pallet to shaping the atmospheric climate of spaces around us.

House of Arts and Culture

Our entry to Beirut's House of Arts and Culture has been released!

MAKE DESIGN proposed to 'Extend the Urban Landscape.' An exhibition ramp spills onto the street, inviting visitors to meandor up through the buildings interactive sculpture, projection art, and music installations. The wood clad main theater is held within the framework of the ramp, structure. The entire building is then wrapped in a mediating glass and stone screen.
The entry facilitates an outdoor ampatheater complete with projection screens, garden, and ample seating.

The North Facade provides a peak in to and out of the theater with in.

A light well at the East Facade lets light filter down into all spaces of the building.

The south facade filters in light for the meandering exhibition garden ramp.

The building is lifted to allow the users a connective entry from the exterior garden to the interior exhibition ramp.  The west Facade acts as a air scoop of the predominent winds.
